Saw this article today. Was really impressed with what GW2's Game Director had to say:

They don't want a gear treadmill (which is totally freakin awesome), and they're focused on trying to make the game still kicking even 10 years down the line.

Yep the manifesto video they were talking about in the article was what sold me on trying out GW2. That video was launched a year before the release of the beta. The game has definitely exceeded my expectations.
